The line-up is in and Divisionals is this Sunday! We will be swimming strong this week, but also focusing on the finer things – fast turns, fast starts, perfect technique. Get to practice so you are ready to go this Sunday!
Divisionals are this Sunday, February 7 at the University of Akron. Be there by 8:15 a.m. for our warm-ups at 8:45 a.m. The meet starts at 10:00 a.m. Two pools will be running at the same time. 10 & Unders swim in one pool; 11 & Older swimmers in the other. The pools are right next to each other. Swimmers 10 & Under – we will be given a racquet ball court for our team right off the hallway to the pool deck. This is where the 10 & Under swimmers should hang-out during the meet. Assistant coaches and volunteer parents will help these swimmers get to their events on time. Older swimmers – 11 & Up – we will either be assigned deck space or we will establish some. If any 11 & Older swimmers get to the pool before the coaches – look for our assigned space (or grab an area) and spread out so we have enough space for our swimmers.
This is a hectic meet with two pools going, so pay attention and DO NOT MISS YOUR EVENTS! Remember – one pool just has 10 & Unders in it so events come up fast. First the medley relays will take place – but just the 9 & 10s and 8 & Unders. The 200 free and 100 IM come very quickly. For those in a medley relay and then the 200 free or IM– when you get out of the pool after your medley relay, go immediately to Clerk of Course (on the pool deck). Coaches will help direct you. You will not have the older kids swimming in your pool, so the 50 frees come very fast as well. Once you get the hang of it, you will be fine.
Same goes for the 11 & Older swimmers. Once the 11-12 boys medley relays are done – boom; the 15 & Over 200 free is up. Remember – there are not 9 & 10 or 8 & Under swimmers competing in your pool. Those in the 11 & Older pool do not have a Clerk of Course, so once you get out of the water from your relay, know where you are to be (event #, heat and lane) and go to that block for your 200 free. Divisionals is not known for having many 15 & Older swimmers, so there may only be one heat of each and then the 13-14 200 free swimmers better be ready to go. The pace will back off after that, but remember – there are no 9 & 10 or 8 & Unders swimmers in your pool, so the time between events will be way quicker! We will review all of this at practice this week.
Divisional Fees – Coach Sue will be passing out your Divisional fee envelopes on Monday. Please put the correct amount BACK IN THE FEE ENVELOPE (cash or check made out to Y-Neptunes) and return it to Coach Sue. I would love to have all fee money back to me by Wednesday, so I know that everyone knows they are swimming in Divisionals. I believe this is the biggest team we have ever taken to Divisionals! Congratulations for committing to this event by getting all three of your dual meets in. We are going to have a blast!
Presidential Info – All Presidential Invitational entries and fees need to be turned into Karla Cabrera this week! All Neptune swimmers should participate in this meet held at YSU on February 14. Your parents are required to be there working – you might as well swim! And we give the BEST awards of any YMCA invitational I know of in northeast Ohio. We also pass out cool heat winner awards, and rumor has it – for a small fee – swimmers will be able to purchase a Valentine and have it delivered to the person of their choice during the meet. Hmmm… so many possibilities.
Parents – remember – everyone family works this meet. If you have not signed up to work, you MUST do so this week. You can either sign-up on the form on the Neptune Info Board, or you can call Melanie Emerson at 330-559-3700 and do it on the phone. If you do not sign-up or do not call, you will be assigned a job. This is our team’s only fundraiser so EVERYONE must participate. If you can not be there the day of the meet, there are jobs that need done now and we need help with set-up the night before.
Neptune Banquet Information is now in your mailboxes. Please fill out the form and return it to Melanie Emerson or a coach. Also be sure to participate in our team’s Chinese auction held during the banquet. We ask each family donate an item which we will then raffle off throughout the banquet This is a blast and makes the banquet just that much more fun! Once you get your item, bring it to practice to Coach Sue or Melanie Emerson. We would rather have the item(s) before the day of the banquet so we can have everything set-up when the doors open on banquet day. Please try to bring your donated item in between now and February 11! Thanks in advance!

Sunday, Feburary 14, 2010
Yes, here comes our major team fundraiser! Each February, we host the Presidential Invitational swim meet at Youngstown State University the Sunday before Presiden't Day. This year's meet will take place February 14th. This meet is run solely by our Neptune parents and all parents are required to help out and all neptune swummers are expected to participate.
Those who head up the major areas of this swim meet are getting together the first week in January to get organized. The following week, we will then hold an informational meeting concerning the Presidential Invitational that all parents should make a point of attending. That date will be in next week's news.
In the meantime, know there are multitudes of ways parents can help out with this meet. We will need timers, concession stand workers, crowd control people, and people to work admissions and to sell meet programs and t-shirts. We will need people to help set-up and tear down, to pass out awards and to give out heat winner prizes.
We have our core group of parents - the same group who do this for our dual meets - who will run the timing system and score and start the meet. But we will need all of our officials to take a shift. Members of the YSU Girls swim team always help with timing, and clerk of course and we often have older Neptune swimmers help with the younger swimmers during that session as well.
To help you prepare- here is the short list of what you need to know.
* Presidential Invitational, sunday, Feburary 14. Mark that date on yoru schedule. I know its is Valentine's Day, but this emet will be over by mid afternoon and you will have plenty of time to have dinner with your sweetheart!
* All Neptune parents must work this meet - no exceptions.
* Informational parent meeting about the Presidential Invite and where you can sign-up to work will be announced next week.
* All Neptune swimmers should swim at this meet.
* It is an invitational, so the swimmers choose what individual events they want to swim. You are permitted to swim four individual events. You enter yourselves - Coast Sue does nto adnwill not be entering anyone.
* Invitational entry sheets are available on-line at our website. Print off and fill out.
* It is an invitational aNd our fund-raiser, so there is a small fee ($3) per individuals event entered.
* Individual event entries AND fees are due to Karla Cabrera by Feburary 4, 2010.
* Please enter early. Last year, I, Coach Sue, spent a good 15 hours on the phone tracking down people asking them where their entries were as I did not want anyone to be left out of the meet. I know you get busy, but PLEASE, get this done and do not rely on me calling to remind you top enter. I have my own harried schedule to deal with. I do not need to add calling 30 swimmers to my list.
* DO NOT enter yourself in any relays. I , Coach Sue, make up all the relays and you will receive a relay fee envelope the day of the meet ($2 entry per relay) when relays are announced. Know swimmers can compete in a maximum of two relays.
Parents... have you seen those awesome Green shirts with yellow striping around the pool deck? Well here is the information for you. Order one today!
Attention All Neptune Swimmers from Coach Sue...
It's smack-down time. Time to see what you're made of. Time to put purpose in your practice.
Time for the King Neptune Challenge!!
What is the King Neptune Challenge you ask? Let me tell ya...
Any swimmer who swims every dual meet event offered for their age group over the course of the Neptune swim season will have conquered the King Neptune Challenge. The events swum can be done at Neptune dual meets, YMCA invitationals or USA meets. You must finish each event and not be disqualified. So if the breaststroke kick is daunting, better get it legal. If the 100 fly seems impossible, better focus on that stroke in practice.
Everyone is automatically pre-entered into the King Neptune Challenge, but who will succeed?
REQUIREMENTS
* 8 & Unders must swim 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly and do the 50 yard freestyle.
* 9 & 10s and 11 & 12s must swim 50 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly as well as a 200 free, 100 free and 100 IM (individual medley).
* 13 & 14 and 15 & Over swimmers must swim a 50 of freestyle, a 100 of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, as well as a 200 freestyle, 200 IM, and 500 freestyle.
All swimmers who complete the King Neptune Challenge will win a cool King Neptune Challenge pin to put on their swim bag; warm-up jacket; high schoolers - put the pin on your swim letter.
The Pin is the award.
***High school swimmers, please turn in your times and events to Coach Sue when you swim at high school meets to meet the eligibility requirements for this award. Thank you.
Remember we share our YMCA with other members...even during HOME meets.
Here are a few do's and don'ts to remember:
DO | DON'T |
DO Enjoy your snacks in the Youth Lobby | DON'T Sneak a snack in the gym area |
DO WALK through our halls and deck area with your shoes on. | DON'T RUN to any area of the YMCA |
DO - NEPTUNE families are encouraged to use the RIGHT half of the gym. | DON'T Forget to welcome our visitors |
DO - NEPTUNE families are encouraged to network with other families (in different age groups) so that eveyone can see their child swim. This is important when sitting in the bleachers. | DON'T Forget to be considerate to others. |
THANK YOU!
